RESPIRATION AND THE AIRWAY Effects of alveolar dead - space , shunt and _ V = _ Q distribution on respiratory dead - space measurements
نویسنده
چکیده
Background. Respiratory dead-space is often increased in lung disease. This study evaluates the effects of increased alveolar dead-space (VDalv), pulmonary shunt, and abnormal ventilation perfusion ratio ( _ V= _ Q) distributions on dead-space and alveolar partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PACO2) calculated by various methods, assesses a recently published non-invasive method (Koulouris method) for the measurement of Bohr dead-space, and evaluates an equation for calculating physiological dead-space (VDphys) in the presence of pulmonary shunt. Methods. Pulmonary shunt, _ V= _ Q distribution and VDalv were varied in a tidally breathing cardiorespiratory model. Respiratory data generated by the model were analysed to calculate dead-spaces by the Fowler, Bohr, Bohr–Enghoff and Koulouris methods. PACO2 was calculated by the method of Koulouris.

متن کاملDead space ventilation in normal children and children with obstructive airways diease.
Anatomical dead space was measured in 72 normal children aged from 5 to 16 years, using the single breath method. There was a linear increase in this measurement with height, weight, and end-inspiratory lung volume. Physiological dead space was measured in 52 normal children using the Bohr equation and substituting a rebreathing PCO2 for alveolar PCO2. There was a parallel increase in this meas...
متن کاملEffect of bronchodilators on lung mechanics in the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a disorder of diffuse lung injury secondary to a wide variety of clinical insults (eg, sepsis) and is manifested by impaired oxygenation, pulmonary edema, and decreased static and dynamic compliance. More recently, airflow resistance has been shown to be increased in humans with ARDS. We designed a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, cr...
متن کاملA Non Invasive Estimate of Dead Space Ventilation from Exercise Measurements
RATIONALE During exercise, heart failure patients (HF) show an out-of-proportion ventilation increase, which in patients with COPD is blunted. When HF and COPD coexist, the ventilatory response to exercise is unpredictable. OBJECTIVES We evaluated a human model of respiratory impairment in 10 COPD-free HF patients and in 10 healthy subjects, tested with a progressive workload exercise with di...
متن کاملHemodynamic and Respiratory Effects of Positive End-expiratory Pressure during a Pulmonary Distress Model in Isoflurane Anesthetized Swine
Background: Several pulmonary and hemodynamic complications may occur during mechanical ventilation of the lungs. The use of a positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) can improve oxygenation and prevent atelectasis, although this method can cause important hemodynamic side effects. Mostly, these hemodynamic effects are due to increased airway pressure that is transferred to the intrapleural spa...
